Gypsy Rose Blanchard (born July 27, 1991) is an American woman who was the victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) by her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee subjected Gypsy to unnecessary medical treatments and convinced her, as well as others, that Gypsy suffered from a variety of illnesses, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and developmental delays.
For years, Gypsy was forced to use a wheelchair, had a feeding tube, and was given medication she didn't need. Her mother controlled nearly every aspect of her life, and isolated her from the outside world. As Gypsy grew older, she became aware that she was not as sick as her mother claimed.
In 2015, Gypsy conspired with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder Dee Dee. Godejohn traveled to Missouri, where the Blanchards lived, and stabbed Dee Dee to death. Gypsy and Godejohn were later apprehended.
Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The case garnered significant media attention and raised awareness about Munchausen%20syndrome%20by%20proxy and the abuse it entails. Gypsy was released on parole on December 28, 2023. Her case has been the subject of numerous documentaries, TV series, and other media.
